Repositioning the Purpose-Built Audience Platform for Publishers
Permutive is a data management platform built from the ground up for publishers. Unlike CDPs or general-purpose AdTech tools, Permutive enables publishers to manage and activate first-party audience data in real time—giving them the control and insights they need to grow sustainable ad revenue. Operating at the intersection of privacy regulation, the collapse of third-party cookies, and the evolution of the open web, Permutive serves premium publishers, media companies, and advertisers across the U.S. and Europe.
Despite a technically differentiated product and a strong founding mission, Permutive's brand messaging had not kept pace with the evolving market. Their positioning was rooted in an adversarial narrative—framing the company as battling data exploiters and defending the soul of the internet. While bold and principled, this messaging failed to connect with the practical, revenue-driven needs of their publisher customers. It was time for a repositioning grounded in customer truth.
Gus Granger Design was engaged to lead a quantitative customer research initiative and develop a brand messaging framework that would reposition Permutive as the indispensable Audience Platform for publishers—one that spoke directly to what publishers actually need: greater control, higher-value audience insights, and more economically sustainable ad revenue.
